Siteground Web Hosting

From its very early days in 2004, SiteGround has slowly and steadily worked towards turning into a leading web hosting service provider. The same philosophy is applied to everything they do: from the way they choose hardware, the attention put into server architecture, the innovation in their custom software solutions, the inspiration they get from their partners and the friendship built with clients.

They take just as good care of employees as they do clients. Believing that happy employees lead to happy customers, they offer all kinds of perks to motivate and inspire the staff. With only a handful of people working from their university dorm rooms in the beginning, today the company has about 220 employees and is constantly growing.

Fun Fact: The Office Is Our Playground. It's not just work and no play – we love having fun together.

Unlimited and Limits in the Terms of Service (ToS)

(editor’s earth shattering profound thought: unless a webhost uses the term “unmetered” then there is likely a limit somewhere)

Reading SiteGround’s Terms of Service is almost painful. Not because it is written by some pretentious legal type making ostentatious use of Latin. Rather, in an attempt to outline and clearly convey the terms in numerous possible scenario, the ToS becomes bulky and burdensome to follow.

As clearly stated in their plans, SiteGround does have limits...

NOTE: As of July 2016, SiteGround has modified their package limits. Unlimited is now Unmetered

“All hosting plans have a web space allocation set out on their Product Page. Each customer is solely responsible for monitoring their web space usage from the cPanel of their account. SiteGround will limit your file upload service and send you an email warning to the email address you provided. If you do not take action to comply with the overage warning and the terms and deadlines specified in the warning email, SiteGround reserves the right to suspend your account or terminate this Agreement without liability to you.”

“For clients remaining on old shared hosting plans who have not been switched to any of the new ones (StartUp, GrowBig and GoGeek), unlimited web space applies to use of web pages only (html, php, etc.) All other files are considered as Premium storage, which cannot exceed 10GB in size for all old plans.”

Customers on any shared hosting plan will ensure that neither you nor any of your End Users makes excessive or wasteful use of the Server to SiteGround's detriment or that of SiteGround's other customers. The terms "excessive" and "wasteful" are defined by our experience with similarly situated customers. This means that your use of bandwidth may not exceed that of similarly situated customers. Unlimited bandwidth use applies to your use of web pages only (html, php, etc.), not for storage of movies, pictures or MP3 files.

There are numerous terms and stipulations outlined in the ToS, depending on the hosting plan chosen. While much appear to be standard generic stuff, you should read the ToS in its entirety prior to purchasing any service.

Service Level Agreement (SLA)

We guarantee network uptime 99.9% of the time during a 12-month period. Scheduled maintenance, Force Majeure such as hardware and software failure, hackers' and other attacks, and other, and Third Party Services are excluded. Our calculation of network availability is based on our internal records. We may accept Third Party reports as evidence that you are entitled to a credit under this SLA.

Should we incur a network outage, SiteGround will credit you for an SLA event. Credit will be applied toward your next invoice. You must request a Credit within 3 days of the event covered by the SLA through your User Area.

Acceptable Use Policy (AuP)

Again everyone needs to read that fine print for themselves but it would appear on a glance that SiteGround AuP is short, sweet, and generic in nature. It pretty much constitutes the same jargon found in most other AuP. Nothing shocking but like others is subject to change with little or no notice.

Additional Information & Features

That said, in their basic shared ‘starter’ package SiteGround does not provide ‘priority’ support... Support yes, but not ‘priority’ support. Likely this technicality makes little difference to the average user on most days but they mention it so we mention it!

Security Front. ProActive or Oblivious:

  • were the first to implement a unique mechanism that isolates server accounts from each other and prevents a single vulnerable account from affecting the whole server.
  • proactively monitor and detect security exploits, but also write our own patches to fix vulnerabilities immediately instead of waiting and putting our clients at risk.
  • always running the latest version of the software on hosting servers

SiteGround also offers an option for Hackalert. Hackalert is a third party cloud-based hosted Software Service for malware detection and early warning system powered by ARMORIZE TECHNOLOGIES, INC. SiteGround Customers, who have added the service will have up to 10 random pages of their website scanned daily and will get notified via email if the scan detects hacked and injected with malicious code pages.

(editor’s note: Kudo’s to SiteGround on this one. It’s something other web hosts may wish to emulate) We’re going to call SiteGround ProActive.

Eco-Conscious Green Meter: The top hit doing a search using the keyword SiteGround + Green is ‘SiteGround Goes Green’

Quoting: “we’ve has always been enthusiastic about reducing pollution, saving energy and water, but we always felt that’s not enough. So, we decided to try a more effective, down-to-earth, hands-on approach to doing something good for our planet. This weekend the SiteGround team planted over 400 trees and cleaned the surrounding area. There were more than 50 of us - SiteGround employees, friends, kids and a dog”.

Payment Options: The payment methods accepted by SiteGround are Credit cards, Debit cards, and PayPal. Another option is using a bank transfer, but it is for payments at the total price of, or above, $500. As there was no mention of bitcoins or any other alternative currency, we are guessing they are sticking to the real stuff!

Account Cancellation: You may terminate the Services through the User Area or by contacting our customer service staff by phone or chat (Termination Request). We will send you an email confirmation to acknowledge your completion of the Termination Request (Termination Confirmation). If you do not complete all steps of the Termination Request, or if you fail to use a Termination Request to Terminate the Services, the Services will not be Terminated, and Fees will still be charged. You must follow this procedure in order to Terminate each Service. In order to avoid renewal charges and late cancellation fees, termination must be requested before a Renewal invoice is due.

Index, Parking & 404 Error Page Adverts: They certainly do and ‘retain all revenue associated with this advertising’. “When your Order is accepted, we may place an index page to which your domain points (Index Page). You may disable this Index Page at any time”.

“If you terminate the Services, your domain will be pointed to a suspension page. This page may contain advertising.”

Money Back Guarantee: Our money back guarantee ensures peace of mind that Services will meet your expectations. Termination and Refund requests should be requested from your User area, no later than 30 days from the Effective Date.
(b) Setup and domain name Fees are not refundable and may be due upon cancellation even if waived initially as part of a Special Promotion;
(c) Money Back guarantee covers Shared Hosting plans only – these include StartUp, GrowBig and GoGeek hosting accounts only. Semi-dedicated, Cloud, VPS or Dedicated Hosting services, Third Party Services or features incorporated into the Services are not covered by our Money Back guarantee.

User Resources: The SiteGround blog is active with well written articles across a wide range of topics. There is the Knowledge Base as well as Step-by-Step tutorials for Joomla, Wordpress, Magento, and Drupal.

Loyalty Plan: “Shared hosting packages are discounted for new clients, so that they could get the option to test our services, get used to them and benefit from a better deal during that period. After that, upon renewal, the price reverts to the regular one, which is the actual price of the package. However, there is a way around that, as you can purchase the account for 1, 2 or 3 years upfront and the longer you buy it for, the better deal you would get. The price will freeze during this period and you would not be affected by price changes. Then, when the time comes to renew, as a loyal customer you would be entitled to different renewal deals we would keep you up to date with. We do also run different referral deals, using which our customers get free months added to their hosting accounts.”

Community Outreach: SiteGround has sponsored and worked closely with several open source communities like Joomla, WordPress, and Magento, and was was chosen to be the official hosting provider for Joomla.com. While it was common to see them at WordCamps or a JoomlaDay, it came as a surprise to some when they showed up at DrupalCon LA. They’ve also recently announced sponsoring the 2015 Bulgaria PHP Conference. SiteGround joined the community of hosting providers that publicly spoke against the PIPA and SOPA legislation.
